The Central and Eastern European mobile markets have been an important part of the Telenor Group since the early 1990’s.

The markets in this region are characterised by growth and opportunities, making the region an important part of the growth strategy of Telenor Group in the coming decades as well.  

Solid market positions and high margins

Telenor Group mobile operations in Central and Eastern Europe continue to deliver solid financial performances, despite the current challenging economic environment, with sustained market shares and high margins. In the first quarter of 2009, the region generated 17 per cent of Group revenues and 32 per cent of Group EBITDA. At the end of the first quarter of 2009, Telenor had in total 93 million mobile subscriptions in the region.

World-class mobile services

Telenor Group provides mobile services in Hungary, Montenegro, Serbia, Russia and Ukraine. We also provide broadband services in Russia and other countries of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS). Since the development of the first generation GSM network, the Telenor Group has continuously invested in innovating services and extensive network coverage in the region.  

Driving technological innovation

The Central and Eastern European region has been experiencing years of rapid mobile subscription growth, both in the consumer and business markets. The Telenor Group is currently investing in 3G network roll-out in Hungary, Russia, Serbia and Montenegro. As with all Telenor Group developments, new technological and eco-friendly solutions have first priority. Examples include wind- and solar-powered base stations in Hungary and testing and deployment of next generation wireless broadband in Montenegro.
